Jim and Penny Mullen

Jim and Penny Mullen founded Southwind Farms LLC in July 1998 after more than a year of studying alpacas throughout the United States. Jim had semi-retired as President of H.D. Segur Insurance Co., and Penny had worked part-time at a local grammar school teaching Art. After their six children graduated from college, the Mullens tried raising sheep on their 23 acre farm, but found they could not nurture animals being used for meat consumption. They became interested in alpacas after seeing a postcard in an airline magazine and realized that raising alpacas were the answer they had been looking for.

Personally managed and cared for by Jim and Penny, Southwind Farms has over 50 alpacas and is one of the largest alpaca farms in Connecticut. It represents some of the finest genetics in the Country. Here you can find offspring from Bueno, Fortissimo, Fabio, Caudillo, Altiplano Gold, and Accoyos Augusto, Caligula, Don Juan, El Moustacchio, Powerball and the highest selling alpaca in the industry, Royal Fawn.

"Our alpacas are very special to us and we are more concerned with matching the right alpacas to the right buyers than we are with monetary gain" say the Mullens. No alpaca leaves Southwind Farms unless the potential buyer meets the highest standards.

While our genetic pool of blue ribbon show winners is impressive, we are still working to diversify our selection in order to offer potential buyers alpacas at a reasonable price that they will be proud to own and show throughout the country.
